The Silk Road Collection

RILEY BURNETT recently embarked on a journey across the renowned Silk Road, collecting jewels and inspiration for their NEW collection. Following the passage that many ancient civilizations had walked before, Riley Burnett were motivated by new and exciting smells, textures, and pleasures to the eye.

The Silk Road is a myriad of the oldest and most historical trade routes that connect Asia with the Mediterranean, European and African worlds. Each region specialises in different luxurious materials – from the shimmery silk of China, to the rich and authentic spices from India and the gold jewels of the Roman Empire.

Riley Burnett has sourced natural semi-precious stones from this journey to make their new collection – The Silk Road – with each piece set in sterling silver. The designs have special and unique components, featuring semi-precious stones that are draped in history – dating back decades.

Interesting fact about semi-precious stones!

A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone, a fine gem, or jewel) is a piece of mineral, which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewelry or other adornments.

However certain rocks, (such as lapis lazuli) and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not minerals, but are still used for jewellery, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well.

Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their lustre or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone.

Healing Stones - popular beliefs

Crystals and gemstones have been celebrated by cultures all over the world for thousands of years, as symbols of prestige, wealth and love. They were believed to have magical healing powers for all sorts of ailments, and used as protection against danger and evil.

The Media Alliance, the International Federation of Journalists and the Walkley Foundation have thanked Riley Bunett for their support of the Australian Press Freedom Media Dinner, held in Sydney on Friday, April 29, 2011.
Riley Bunett donated new collection pieces for both auction and for the presenter to wear on the night.
More than $30,000 was raised at the dinner, with this year's fund focusing on continuing the education of children in Nepal and the Philippines, whose parents were killed whilst they were working as journalists.

Pia Skovsgaard (pictured) and her husband Thomas, based just outside Copenhagen, in Solrod Strand, have officially launched their online store (all in Dutch!) for Riley Burnett devotées in Northern Europe.

After a three-month stint in Australia and a bit of canny research, Pia was instantly smitten with the Riley Burnett brand. 'I fell in love with the jewellery immediately,' Pia says, 'with the colours, the variation, the daring combinations ...'

Pia and Thomas will run the online store from their home, where they live with their two boys, their cat and dog. With a real appreciation for style, we are pleased and honoured to welcome our Denmark compatriots into the Riley Burnett fold. 'What made me google Riley Burnett was pure inspiration! On the tail of 'Huey', benevolent bringer of waves, and his dramatic spring swell, in Lennox Head we ready ourselves for the September school holidays.

Jennie and Jason have kindly donated the upstairs balcony space at RB headquarters to Tracey Williams, a local artist and teacher, who will be holding fabulous, fun-filled art workshops for kids (ages 7+).

Every day between 25 September and 3 October, Tracey will take the kids on a 3-hour artistic journey where the kids will create their own papier-mâche masterpieces, incorporating positive word affirmations and colourful Riley Burnett beads.

So, make room in your calendars for your kids to come down and join us for an afternoon of frivolous creative fun! 11AM – 2 PM. Beginners are welcome, success is guaranteed! Stay tuned for some photographic proof!

It's one week until Spring. In honour of the changing of the seasons we have once again put our best foot forward in a celebration of colour to launch our new jewellery collection for summer 2010. All the creativity of the past few months has not been in vain and now it is time to throw the showroom doors open for all to admire and be inspired by the creativity that is, in a word, Gemalicious. Jennie and the team have been hard at work to make sure that this season's range reflects her signature style with a modern edginess that is sure to please even the most discerning of bead-buyers.

The new showroom is awash with Gemalicious colour and as any RB groupie already knows, there's nothing like taking a trip upstairs to soak in the atmosphere of the shop as the salty breeze wafts through the open windows. But don't fret if you are too far away to enjoy all the beauty that this small coastal town has to offer — you can steal your own taste of the new Gemalicous range in our online shop.

In the midst of all this design mayhem we have also managed to de-clutter a corner of the store and have introduced a new menswear range of fashion. Now there are no excuses for the mindful men passing by to saunter up the staircase and see what all the fuss is about - we dare you!

We are now the other side of the solstice and as far as the ‘RB’ calender goes that means we are inching closer to unveiling our next collection.

This collection we are introducing a new budget conscious range - because we believe everyone deserves to be adorned in great pieces. They are colourful, accessible and still designed by head designer Jennie Riley and handcrafted in our Lennox Head workshop.

Bali and not beyond

Well it probably does not come as a surprise to many that the Bangkok trip was postponed. Our thoughts were with our friends and colleagues in Bangkok – we will be visiting very soon.

The Bali trip did go as planned but we have to confess it was not all work and no play. In fact it wasn’t very dull at all if you look at the sparkling water around our new favourite resort, Karma Kandara (pictured).

It was Jennie’s birthday so we just had to take a look. Anyone would, right?

Food was also a highlight on this trip (as it is on every trip). New to us was a food destination - Pili Pili Warung in Seminyak. Yum!

And we did work. Promise.

Jennie says it was all things woven that caught her eye on this trip - woven straw, woven metal, woven fabrics and chainmail.

“But best of all was the inspiration I always get from being in a beautiful environment, experiencing rituals and seeing how they enrich life. Observing the creating of the moment and then the enjoying of it. It slows you down, it connects you to your surroundings. It’s wonderful.”

One insight shared on the trip was a design forecast we never expected to hear from Jennie’s mouth. She uttered the phrase, “pastels are the new bright”. We don’t think we are going to hold her to it but on the other hand - you never know!

An inspiration pilgrimage

Riley Burnett head designer, Jennie Riley, and some of her team are heading off to Bali and Thailand this week on an inspiration pilgrimage.

“I am pretty excited about getting away and experiencing the creative vibes that tend to come our way on these trips,” Jennie says.

“It is those out of the way locations and really local markets where I find the most exciting treasures to bring home.

“Many of the semi-precious stones, metals and yet unknown discoveries will find there way into my next collection.

“The inspiration I get from these trips is definitely a highlight for me in putting together a new range.”

So the secret's out and we're buzzing with the news that we're going to have a new HQ! You can now find us at Level 1 80-84 Ballina Street. Still based by the sea in Lennox Head in the Northern Rivers, our new workshop and production space is going to be MASSIVE and it's located just a few doors down the road! The fit out it madly underway, new stock has been ordered, and the movers booked. It's a huge job but we can't wait for the increased work space, the natural light that falls from skylights built into 16ft ceilings, and views of the ocean.

In the last edition of our newsletter we asked you seasoned party goers to tell us your best tips to survive the party season. Here’s what you said...

GET IN TRAINING

Spend September, October and November working up to December (rest up but have some late nights, slowly step up cocktail or bubbly intake, and dose up on Vitamin B)
Pace yourself. Start with early nights early in the week and increase how long you are partying by an hour a day and have a complete rest on Sunday!
Throughout the silly season swim in the ocean (if you can), take walks or do yoga everyday to clear the mind
Treat yourseld to heaps of DIY facials
Say NO to those events you’re not keen on. Believe it or not, you don’t have to go to everything

WHAT TO WEAR

Remember it's style all the way, so keep outfits simple and classy
Therapy helps to alleviate stress, and retail therapy for yourself works a treat!
Minimise your makeup as too much clogs those pores. Keep it natural and fresh
Get creative on outfits and maybe even share your wardrobe with a friend of the same size. It’s like doubling your wardrobe and simultaneously saving you pennies for more important things like bubbly...
Accessorise (with your latest RB baubles of course) because when you look like a million dollars you feel like a million dollars!

ON THE NIGHT

Take it slowly and do lots of chatting between cocktails
Drink the best bubbles you can afford
Eat lots of small morsels of posh nosh
Drink loads of water. Have a glass after every alcoholic drink. It helps the liver survive too.
Always be ready with a gorgeous smile for the camera
Only the very selfish drink and drive. Real party animals consider others.

A BIG thank-you for the dozens of entries we had in our Neon Warrior Necklace Competition.

In the last edition of our newsletter we asked you to tell us in 25 words or less how you invoke your inner warrior every day. The winner will be announced in this month's newsletter but we had such a hard time choosing only one winner from all the poetic, lyrical, humorous and just plain brilliant entries that we had to award a few other prizes as well...

Runner up, Roslyn from Kensington Gardens (SA), who wrote...

We also loved this entry by Megan from Alstonville (NSW) but as it was a little over the word limit...

"My Inner Warrior - ah, she is alive and well everyday! I am off to Ghana with my Inner Warrior in one month! I will be there for 2-3 years to do volunteering work. Warriors NEED to help others - they have their soft side too! So this is their challenge."

style hint - extender chains

So you have a favourite Riley Burnett bracelet. My fav is the one pictured above. Here's a little tip for you to try that will add greater versatility into your jewellery collection... Simply add an extender chain to convert your treasured piece from a bracelet to a necklace!

Easy to attach, extender chains may look simple but the results can be quite amazing! You could also lengthen an RB necklace to make it longer for that free Summer look. We'd love to see some pics of how you've EXTENDED your collection or add a comment below for another extension tip!

Stunning in its hue and gorgeous to wear, turquoise is one of the oldest semi-precious stones. Historically, turquoise was considered a stone of life and good fortune and had healing properties. The color of turquoise can vary from deep blue to deep green with every variation in between and is found in Iran, the US, Sinai, China, Afghanistan, Australia, Chile, Saxony, Cornwall and Turkestan.

Choosing turquoise…

When choosing turquoise you will encounter 4 different in the jewellery market: Natural (comes directly from the mine. It is cut shaped and polished and set into jewellery); Stabilized (natural turquoise usually in nugget form that is submerged into a stabilizing compound. The pores of the stone have been filled with a clear resin that makes the stone usable); Treated (color enhanced); and Fake (ceramics, bone, celluloid and plastic are used to imitate turquoise).

It is becoming increasingly difficult to spot real from fake turquoise so it’s best to ask the seller a lot of questions to ensure the real deal. If you have any secret tips in how to spot the real please leave a comment below.

Caring for you turquoise…

Being a phosphate mineral, turquoise is inherently fragile and sensitive to solvents including perfume, sunscreen and hairspray as well as commercial cleaning fluids. Long exposure to sunlight will also discolour your turquoise After wearing, gently clean your turquoise with a soft cloth to avoid a build up of residue, and should be stored in its own container to avoid scratching by harder gems.

Jason's on his way home now from an amazing and successful trip but I just had to post up these fabulous pics he took in Santorini. Doesn't it just look incredible. We can all picture ourselves enjoying fresh sardines while sitting at those tables. They are actually in an amazing little fishing village called Amouthi. Apparently the donkeys are for the people too lazy to walk it back up the hill. Nice, though probably a little bumpy!

After a staggering 36 hours in transit and only 4 hours sleep, Jason arrived in Italy, the home of style and birthplace of Riley Burnett. Travelling to Pisa and meeting up with RB Italian agent Jon, Jason soon discovered that suitcases with wheels are not designed for cobbled European streets. We are sympathetic, Jason, but only through a veil of envy...

What we are unabashedly gleeful about is RB jewellery being snapped up like the last tortellini at a raduno famigliare! Well the Italians are known for their flair and panache.
